Tales of tempestuous petticoats

and irresponsible footwear

Poetry and Prose at the Pub kicked off last November at Filthy McFadden’s Irish Pub, Green Square Kingston. Held on the last Sunday of the month from 2 pm onwards, this year promises to be more rip-roaring than ever. Each meeting features an Irish writer where a guest reader performs excerpts of their work, and then readers perform their own poems or prose loosely related to the theme.

As February is the month for lovers with St Valentine’s day on the 15th, the theme this month is love lust and romance inspired by;

Pamela Pounce; a tale of tempestuous petticoats, by Agnes Castle and In these Shoes? A saucy song about what a girl can achieve in the most irresponsible of footware.

Watch the Kirsty MacColl version:

We especially want to encourage the women poets and romance writers of Canberra. We don’t seem to get out much to perform around town (I suspect we are up in our airless garrets squirreling away at our next best seller), so as much as we love the men they do tend to dominate the readings and slams around town, so girls, ladies, women, step up!

Do you have poems of sweet swooning memories of your first love? Lamentations of love gone wrong? A treatise on the meaning of love? What about a humorous look at internet dating for the unwary? What about just sticking the boot into that ex with a performance poem? Could you read an excerpt from your romance novel? (Limit of 500 words)

So by way of encouragement … women come dressed in your most outrageous shoes. There will be prizes including 3 6 month memberships to the ACT Writers Centre and you will be entertained by some saucy music and performances.

She melted like wax

though alabaster, cast of ivory

reduced to cream one autumn night

a bolt of silk unfurled across the floor

porcelain dripping to milk

waiting for the cat to come lap her up

FIRE ON THE HILL

Live at Filthy's

Saturday 12th December, 8pm onwards

‘…a sound which is diverse, dynamic and at times, well, odd.’ Emma Gibson - City News (Canberra)

Fire On The Hill are a roots/rock band currently based in Canberra. Their sound is passionate, lyrical, sonically expansive and often quite serious with dark & dirty overtones. Some of their influences include (in no particular order): Pink Floyd, Tom Waites, Hendrix, Wilco, Elliot Smith, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and The Beatles.

Both Aaron and Lachlan sing lead vocals and write songs for the band. They each have their own distinctive sound. As a collective of experienced working musicians, the band draws influence from a diverse range of roots based styles, but with a broad approach that blurs the lines.

Some of Fire On The Hill’s recent noteworthy achievements:

• Showcase artist at the National Folk Alliance Convention 2005

• Played as part of the Brunswick Music Festival (support act for Sophie Koh), Melbourne, April 2006

• Played at Canberra Fringe (National Multicultural Festival) 2005 & 2006

• Support act for touring Canadian group Nine-Mile, ANU bar, May 2006 .

BHAGAVAD GUITARS

Live at Filthy's

Thursday 10th December, 8pm onwards

After forming, morphing, falling, stalling and reforming the Bhagavad Guitars were the nearly next big thing back in the late 80's. Right on the cusp, as their major debut was set to be released, they imploded.

Now, against the odds, they are getting the old band back together again. Drawing on the two albums and three eps they officially released, the Bhagavad Guitars find the best thing about being timeless fishes out of water is that they sound just as in/out of place now as they did back then.

Slouching Towards Bethlehem

For our last readings for the year we are using the poem by William Butler Yeats The Second Coming.

Christmas is interesting for all and not just the religious in our culture.

Bethlehem of course, makes possible Calvary and Armageddon.

What does Christmas mean to you with this in mind?

This month the theme is open around the theme of the Yeats poem and the meaning of Christmas in general.

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)

THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
