Its late... The darkening sky forces you into a bar. The crowd is ready to burst, the support act must have been cooking. Three young guys set up their gear, which looks like it could belong to their grandparents. The trio explode into action and start working on grooves that take the crowd from an island beach party, to a smoky, funky blues dance and beyond. The refreshed vintage tones infect everyone with rhythm and joy. New and old these people have come for the Sneaky Weasel Gang.
Dan Carroll, Bryn Stanford and Jason Bale make up electric trio that is SWG. They've been around the ropes a few times now having played over 300 shows, including several independent tours and festival billings including West and East coast Blues and Roots, Rollercoaster, Island Vibes and Wave Rock Weekender amoung many others. SWG enjoy music from many places but choose play any combination of blues/ funk/ reggae and rock whilst still holding a root in all four. For an independent, West Australian band of 21yr old mates, these guys really have something.
Every once in a while a collection of musicians gather themselves together around a table in Canberra and knock out some reels. This Friday will be no different as Filthy McFadden's proudly welcomes back The Drunk Uncles!
Los Chavos are a Canberra based 7 piece band playing Latin rock, cumbia, ska, reggae, and samba. Lead singer Andy Jauregui spices up the music with his never-ending energy and verve. A former Latin rock singer from Cochabamba in Bolivia, he brings an infectious blast of Latino exuberance to every performance.
Add punchy horns and sexy Latin rhythms, and before you know it you’ll be swinging your hips in true Latin style. There is no resisting the vivacity of Los Chavos!
Calling all ACT writers: Are you addicted to alliteration?
Like to mix bards and beer?
How about rhyme and strine?
If you do then perhaps a performance at Poetry and Prose at the Pub will lift your literary wings.
Poetry and Prose at the Pub is a new opportunity for ACT writers to showcase their skills in a relaxed environment.
The forum will be launched at 2pm on October 25th at Filthy McFadden’s Irish Pub in Green Square, Kingston, and will continue on a monthly basis on the last Sunday of each month.
Each meeting will contain three events. First, there will be an opportunity for writers to give readings from famous Irish writers. Next is a common-theme event, and finally an open-microphone event within a set-word limit.
For the inaugural event the theme is ‘Skiing in Finnegan’s Wake’. Writers are to compose 50 words (no more, no less) based on the style of James Joyce in Finnegan’s Wake or Ulysses. The compositions must include the words ‘Filthy’ and ‘Ulysses’.
Event organizer and Canberra Institute of Technology writing teacher Lorese Vera said the idea came about as a way to keep in touch and showcase the work of the many talented writers she has taught over the last 10 years.
“There are several terrific poetry slams around town but they all happen in the late evenings and do not always suit people with families,” Lorese said. “These readings will be open to everyone, the venue is family friendly, and the readings include prose as well as poetry. We also expect guest celebrity writers to attend the meetings.”
